Geological conditions at Visakhapatnam were ideal for the construction of a mined rock cavern.
Visakhapatnam is the natural choice for receiving LPG on the east coast. An LPG berth was commissioned around 2003 at the outer harbour by the Visakhapatnam Port Trust which has sufficient draft to receive VLGC’s capacity of 40,000 – 45,000 MT.
Downstream infrastructure for evacuation of LPG has already been developed by HPCL and LPG pipeline up to Secunderabad has been completed by Gas Authority of India Ltd., and is in operation.
Visakhapatnam is a nodal point for the supply of LPG to Andhra Pradesh and adjoining region and from here LPG could also be supplied to smaller terminals on the east coast and/or re-exported to neighbouring countries.
